Hey, you. Yes, You. Come here. Come closer. I want to tell you a secret.
She didn’t believe it. They couldn’t possibly want to talk to her. It felt like a Never Been Kissed moment. The kind where the nerd or the fat chick gets picked on and tricked. That is how she always saw it, at least in some ways. Maybe not as dramatic as high school, but that high school kid was still there a little. Even though she lived a long adult life with success, love, and admiration from different quarters.
There were people who said they wanted her, said they were attracted to her, but she didn’t look at them. She looked at the ones that wouldn’t notice her. The ones that toyed with her. The ones that said they were interested, but she couldn’t hold on to. It wasn’t her looks anymore that kept her from being as confident as she could be. It was other things.
Those things that her past showed where she was not good enough. That was more believable; she had the proof to look at and observe.
But they said something different. They reached for her. They let her become. They showed her who she was and who she could be.
They let her be the good girl and saw beneath the bratty exterior: the insecurities, the craving for attention, the dirty deeds she would do just to get it.
They knew who she was. And she had to decide: does she believe them, does she let them take control, or does she believe the voices in her head that say she is not ready for the risk?
Come closer. The risk is always worth taking.
